While street legal vehicles are not required to have the OHV sticker, I think it is a good idea to support the program by purchasing the sticker anyway. It's good Public Relations to have the sticker on a street legal vehicle because it shows everyone that you are willing to go beyond the minimum to support motorized access to the backcountry. 25 cents of every resgistration goes to the
Colorado Search and Rescue Fund. Anyone with a current hunting/fishing license, or boat, snowmobile, ATV
registration is already covered by the fund.
If you do not want to pay for the OHV sticker then seriously consider buying a
Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue (CORSAR) Card. These cards can be purchased at Walmarts and many other vendors. A list of vendors can be found here.
The card is not insurance and does not reimburse individuals nor does it pay for medical transport. Medical transport includes helicopter flights or ground ambulance. If aircraft are used as a search vehicle, those costs are reimbursed by the fund. If the aircraft becomes a medical transport due to a medical emergency, the medical portion of the transport is not covered.
You can purchase a card over the phone with a credit card by calling
(970)248-7310. For the cost of the card, you have helped ensure that trained and well equipped search and rescue teams will respond should you become lost or in need of rescue. Furthermore, volunteers will not have to incur undue expense due to your emergency.
