Like most high Colorado pass routes, Indians used the routes before the miners arrived. In this case it was the Ute Indians.

Miners showed up in the early 1860s and the route was surveyed as a railroad route in 1881.

During World War II the route was improve to provide access to the Graysill Mine. This mine produced vanadium ("red cake") and uranium ("yellow cake") used in the first atomic bombs. The mine continued to produce until 1963.
